When an ABS unit needs replacing

The ABS unit (Anti-lock Braking System) prevents wheel lockup during emergency braking by pulse-releasing and closing the brakes. If the unit fails, the ABS warning light comes on and the system falls back to backup mode (the brake functions as a regular brake without ABS). Symptoms of an ABS fault: ABS light on continuously, uneven braking during an emergency stop, pulsing vibration during braking under normal conditions (ABS activates falsely), and the engine warning light may come on with an ABS code. Diagnostics reveals whether the fault is in the unit itself, a sensor or the wiring.

Why do ABS systems fail?

ABS failures most commonly come from electronics — solder fatigue in the circuit boards after years of use. Finnish damp conditions aggravate this: moisture reaches the ABS unit and causes corrosion. Another common fault is an ABS sensor failure on a wheel — this is cheaper to fix than the full unit. Diagnostics identifies the fault source so unnecessary replacements aren't made.
