When the timing belt needs replacing

The timing belt links the crankshaft and camshaft rotations and makes sure the valves open at exactly the right moment relative to the piston travel. If the belt snaps or jumps a tooth, the valves strike the pistons and the internal engine components are destroyed — the bill can run to thousands of euros or force a full engine replacement.

Manufacturers specify the replacement interval in the service schedule: most common is every 5–10 years or 90 000–150 000 km, whichever comes first. A car racking up city kilometres quickly hits the mileage limit, but a lightly used car is limited by age — rubber hardens and cracks as it ages.

The belt kit includes the belt itself plus the tensioner and idler pulleys. All are replaced together because they wear at the same rate and stripping the engine later is the same amount of labour. On most engines we also recommend replacing the water pump at the same time, since it sits under the timing belt and replacing it separately later is not cost-effective.

How the replacement is done

Work begins by marking the engine's correct timing to the manufacturer's reference marks. The crankshaft and camshafts are set to TDC and every timing pulley is locked with dedicated tools. The old belt, tensioner and idler pulleys are removed and the water pump is inspected.

The new kit is fitted in strict order. The tensioner is preloaded to the manufacturer's figure and the belt tension is checked — too tight stresses bearings, too loose and the belt can jump teeth. The crankshaft is turned by hand through two full revolutions to confirm valve-to-piston clearance.

If the water pump is being replaced, the cooling system is drained, the new pump fitted and the system properly bled afterwards. The engine is started, run sounds are listened to, and the diagnostic tool confirms every sensor is reporting correct values. The job ends with a test drive.

Why do timing belts fail early?

The most common cause of premature failure is an oil leak from the crankshaft or camshaft seal — oil rapidly attacks the rubber and the belt starts delaminating. A defective tensioner pulley also accelerates wear: a seized bearing creates uneven friction and the teeth start tearing. If the battery has been removed and the engine has been turned to the wrong position, the belt teeth can shear off in a single moment. For these reasons timing belt replacement requires proper manufacturer tools and an experienced technician — cutting corners is almost a guaranteed route to a very expensive repair.
