When the battery needs replacing

A car battery's normal service life is 4–7 years, depending on type, use and climate. Cold weather strains a battery heavily — at -10 °C the usable capacity drops by roughly half, and a tired battery that performed well in summer can fail on the first cold morning.

Common warnings of an ageing battery include slow and hesitant starts, the dashboard dimming during cranking, slow power window and central locking operation, and inconsistent starting across the seasons. Modern cars also warn directly — Start-Stop shuts off when the battery can no longer supply enough current.

Battery condition can be tested in minutes with a load tester that measures cold-cranking amps (CCA) under load. If the values are below the manufacturer's specification, replacement should be done before the next cold snap.

How the battery is replaced

A modern car requires a correct replacement procedure: to preserve electronic system codes, learned settings and module security, a backup power supply or diagnostic tool is connected before disconnecting the old battery. The old battery is disconnected negative-first, then positive, the clamps are released and the battery is lifted out.

The new battery goes in and the cables are reconnected in reverse order — positive first, then negative. The terminals are cleaned and sprayed with protectant. Afterwards the car's system is coded with the new battery's type and CCA figure via the diagnostic tool so the charging system applies the right profile.

On Start-Stop cars coding is essential — without it the car either doesn't recognise the new battery at all or tries to charge it with the wrong profile, significantly shortening its life. The job ends with checking the cranking performance, charging voltage (normally 13.8–14.4 V) and parasitic current with the car at rest.

Why does the battery drain too quickly?

Premature battery fade has many possible causes. The most common is an alternator regulation fault that leaves the battery permanently undercharged or — less often — boils it by overcharging. Another frequent issue is a parasitic drain: an electrical component (a stuck courtesy light, a faulty radio, a BCM glitch) keeps drawing current even with the car locked. Parasitic current is measured with specialist equipment and usually exposes the fault in a single visit. Age and use matter too: short city trips never fully recharge the battery, and on a Start-Stop car cold cranks drain it faster than the manufacturer expects.
