When wheel alignment should be checked

Wheel alignment is one of the most often-forgotten service items, even though its impact on safety, comfort and running costs is significant. Alignment should be checked whenever chassis parts have been replaced (control arms, tie rod ends, shock absorbers), after the car has hit a pothole or kerb, or at least every two years as routine. Signs of incorrect alignment include uneven tyre wear (usually the inner or outer edge wears first), the car pulling to one side on a straight road, a crooked steering wheel when driving straight, or moderate steering vibration. Some symptoms only become noticeable at motorway speeds. Even when alignment is not dramatically out, a small deviation from the manufacturer's values increases tyre rolling resistance and therefore fuel consumption. A 10 mm toe-out can wear one side of a tyre half way through its life before the other, even if everything else is correct.

How alignment is done

Modern alignment is done with a 3D camera system that captures all four wheel angles at the same time. The car is driven onto a special alignment rack and reflector targets are mounted on the wheels. Cameras see these targets and measure angles in real time: toe, camber, caster and rear-axle alignment. Before actual adjustment we check that nothing in the chassis is worn — ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel bearings — because alignment based on worn parts won't hold. Any damage and recommendations are explained to the customer before any adjustment is made. Adjustments are made to manufacturer specification. Front toe is set at the tie rods and rear angles are adjusted, where factory-configurable, via shims and bushings. Four-wheel alignment is essential if rear-axle geometry is adjustable, because only then can we confirm that the rear wheels track exactly in line with the fronts.

Why does alignment drift and the car pull to one side?

Alignment loss often begins unnoticed: small kerb impacts, deep Finnish spring-time potholes or ageing of rubber components gradually shift the chassis geometry. The most common wear points are tie rod end play, lower control arm bushings, and strut top mounts. If the car pulls clearly to one side on a level road, the cause might also be a twisted rear axle shoe or two different tyres (one new, one worn) — tyre rotation is always checked first. Uneven tyre pressures cause symptoms similar to true alignment faults, so a thorough measurement always begins by confirming pressures and tyre rotation.
