When control arms need replacing

Control arms connect the wheel hub to the car's body and allow suspension travel. They have two critical points: bushings, which permit controlled movement as the spring compresses, and the ball joint, which lets the wheel turn with steering input. Either can wear independently and both are common failure points.

The most typical symptom of a bushing or ball joint fault is a knocking sound heard at low speed on a bumpy surface. The noise can be a tapping, a dull thud or a creak. Steering can feel "floating" on a straight road and the car may be unstable in corners. With a badly worn ball joint, the top of the tyre can actually be felt moving when pushed by hand — at that point the fault is unmistakable.

Control arms contain rubber components that age simply with time. After 150 000 kilometres or a year or two, bushing replacement becomes common even if mileage isn't high. In frost the rubber stiffens and cracks, and the rubber structure no longer cushions movement as it should.

How the replacement is done

Work starts with verifying the reported findings: the mechanic raises the car from a suitable point and moves the wheel and control arm with various levers, letting play in the bushing and ball joint be assessed accurately. Based on this we decide whether to replace the whole arm or just one part — on many makes the ball joint or bushing is available separately, which can significantly reduce parts cost.

The work begins by removing the wheel and undoing the control arm mounting bolts. The ball joint is separated from the steering knuckle with a dedicated tool so the neck isn't damaged. The bushing is pressed out of its housing with a hydraulic press or a special puller — forcing it out damages the body mounting point.

The new control arm is fitted and all mounting bolts are torqued to the manufacturer's specification. Before final tightening the car is lowered onto support stands and the suspension is loaded to normal ride height, so the bushings don't set in the wrong position. Wheel alignment is always performed at the end of the job.

Why do control arms fail prematurely?

Premature damage usually comes from one of two things: a kerb strike or a pothole impact. A heavy impact can distort the internal metal of a ball joint or split a bushing. The car may feel normal at first, but within a few weeks knocking starts and the steering feels loose. On salt-road winter vehicles lower control arm corrosion is another common cause — rust eats the mounting point and the whole arm has to be replaced even if the part itself is otherwise sound. A third cause is so-called "tuning-stiff" bushings that have been fitted to sharpen steering response: they're less durable than the originals and not as effective at absorbing impacts.
