When rear brake discs need replacing

Rear discs are usually more fragile than other braking components because they are thinner and carry the parking brake. Their biggest enemy is rust — particularly when the car sees little use and short journeys, because the rear discs never heat up and salt and moisture remain on the surface. A rear disc can therefore still be good for wear but ready for replacement because of corrosion. Another common reason for replacement is uneven thickness. If one side's pads seize in the caliper, the other pad drags continuously and the disc wears unevenly. This causes vibration through the rear of the car, especially during motorway braking, felt as a pulse through the brake pedal. Discs are always replaced as an axle pair. This ensures braking force is distributed evenly and the car tracks straight during emergency braking.

How the replacement is done

The electronic parking brake is switched to service mode using the diagnostic tool — skipping this step damages the motor. The caliper is removed entirely from its bracket and set carefully aside. The old disc is unscrewed and the hub face is cleaned of rust and old adhesive. The new disc is fitted, the mounting bolts are torqued, and new pads go in at the same time. The caliper is refitted to the specified torque, using the electronic routine for piston retraction where required. The parking brake is calibrated via the diagnostic tool and the fluid level is checked. During the test drive we confirm even braking and no steering-wheel vibration. The electronic parking brake is tested on an incline to confirm holding force. The customer is given bedding-in instructions for optimum pad-to-disc seating.

Why do rear brake discs wear so quickly?

The most common cause of premature rear disc wear is a seized parking brake or caliper. When the electronic brake doesn't fully release or the slides rust, the pads drag against the disc continuously. The result is a disc that overheats and warps after only a few thousand kilometres. Another typical cause is short journeys — moisture and salt corrode the disc faster than driving wears it down. This is why rear brakes often show a disc that looks thick but whose surface is completely pitted and no longer provides proper braking performance.
