When front brake pads need replacing
Front brake pads absorb roughly 70% of braking force, so they wear noticeably faster than rear pads. New pads are 12–19 mm thick and the manufacturer's minimum is typically 3–5 mm. Once the friction material is too thin, the pad no longer grips the disc with enough force and stopping distances increase significantly. The most common warning sign is a high-pitched squeal during braking. This comes from the wear indicator, a small metal tab designed to scrape against the disc before the pad becomes dangerously thin. Many modern cars also have an electronic wear sensor that lights up a warning on the dashboard. Typical replacement interval is 30 000–50 000 km under normal use, but city driving and towing can shorten it considerably. Waiting is not recommended — worn pads damage the discs, multiplying the cost of repair.
How the replacement is done
The car is raised on a lift and the front wheels are removed. Caliper mounting bolts are undone and the caliper is moved aside without straining the brake hose. Old pads are removed and the caliper slides are cleaned and greased with copper paste so the new pads can move freely. Disc thickness is measured with a micrometer and the surface is inspected for grooves and heat cracks. If the readings are within the manufacturer's tolerance, new pads are fitted and the caliper is reattached using the specified torque values. The piston is pushed back into its housing with a dedicated tool and the brake fluid level is checked. At the end of the job a test drive is carried out, where the pads are bedded in against the discs with a few gentle braking applications. This delivers the best friction surface straight away. For the first 200 km the customer is asked to avoid heavy emergency braking so the pads can fully seat.

Why do brakes lose their stopping power?
The most common cause of reduced braking performance is simply the friction material running out, but behind it can also be an unevenly worn disc, a seized caliper slide, a swollen brake hose or degraded brake fluid. When pads are near the end of their life, the caliper piston has to extend further than usual and the hoses or piston seals can start to leak. For this reason the whole front brake system — discs, calipers, hoses and fluid — is always inspected during a pad change, and the customer is told in advance if other parts need replacing.
