An AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) battery is a special lead-acid battery type that withstands the continuous charging and discharging imposed by Start-Stop systems better than a conventional lead-acid battery. AGM batteries are also safe (non-spillable) and more robust in cold conditions.

Symptoms that AGM replacement is due: Start-Stop stops working (the car no longer shuts off at intersections), dashboard warning lights come on in the cold, slow starting or flickering instrument displays. AGM service life is typically 4–7 years.

How an AGM battery is replaced

On a modern car the AGM battery can be in surprising places — under the bonnet, in the boot or even under a passenger seat. The old battery is removed carefully: negative first, then positive. A backup power supply or diagnostic tool is kept connected as power to preserve settings.

The new AGM battery is fitted and terminals are reconnected. The diagnostic tool codes in the battery type and capacity — this is a critical step, without which the BMS system won't charge the battery correctly. Testing confirms charging voltage is normal (13.8–14.4 V) and Start-Stop returns to operation.

Why can't an AGM be replaced with a regular battery?

The BMS (Battery Management System) on Start-Stop cars is designed for AGM battery characteristics — higher charging voltage, faster charge and discharge. A regular lead-acid battery can't withstand these conditions and fails within months. Additionally the car's coding requires AGM type info — wrong coding causes system errors and incorrect charging.
