When the electrical system needs repair

A modern car contains 50–100 electronic control units that communicate with each other over a CAN bus. When a single component in this extended network fails, the consequences can be surprising — for example, doors no longer lock, indicators stop working or the car drops into protect mode without any obvious reason. Typical symptoms of electrical faults include: the car not starting from cold even though the battery is fully charged, the battery discharging overnight, lights dimming and flickering, central locking not working, instrument panel displays flickering or going blank, warning lights coming on for no apparent reason. Some of these are merely annoying comfort issues, others may indicate something more serious — for example a parasitic drain that wastes battery and can, in extreme cases, cause a fire. On a modern car electrical faults are hard to diagnose without the right tools. Beyond multimeters, an oscilloscope is needed to display signal waveforms, along with a CAN-bus analyser that reads every network message. Combined with the traditional multimeter these give a full picture of the system.

How an electrical fault is traced

Diagnostics always start with a careful interview: when does the fault appear, is it continuous or intermittent, which other functions does it affect. From this we get the first idea where to look. Fault codes are read from every control unit, not just the engine, and cross-referenced with the wiring diagrams. Parasitic current measurement is a separate step. The car is placed in closed sleep mode (locked with all door signals cleared) and drain current is measured via the battery's negative cable. Normal is under 50 mA — if the current is higher, we systematically pull fuses to see which load accounts for the excess. Once the faulty circuit is isolated, a detailed investigation follows: voltage, ground and sensor signals are measured and the oscilloscope traces the waveform. Comparing with the wiring diagram's expected values tells us whether the fault is in a connector, a wire, the component itself or the control unit. The repair is planned and the customer receives a precise cost estimate before any work begins.

Why are electrical faults so hard to find?

The difficulty of electrical faults comes from the fact that one symptom can arise from dozens of causes. For example, a battery that discharges can be down to a defective battery, a poor alternator, a parasitic drain in some circuit, a fuse issue or even a CAN bus lockup preventing control units from entering sleep. Testing a single sensor alone is therefore rarely enough — systematic detective work and broad vehicle-electronics knowledge are required. Furthermore, some faults only appear under specific conditions: in the cold, in damp air, or after a specific drive length. Tracking these down may require the car to stay at the workshop for several days so the fault can be reproduced under controlled conditions and localised. Modern measurement tools — oscilloscopes especially — are irreplaceable here.
