When a brake hose needs replacing

The brake hose transfers brake fluid pressure between the brake pipe and the caliper. The hose is rubber and flexible so it can accommodate wheel movement. Over time the rubber stiffens and cracks — especially from frost and UV exposure.

Symptoms: surface cracks on the hose, occasional bulges under braking (a sign of internal damage), weakening braking force (a bulging hose doesn't transmit full pressure) and at worst brake fluid leakage. At the MOT a cracked or bulged hose is a fail.

How a brake hose is replaced

The hose ends are released from their tightly torqued threaded fittings — these require a specialist flare-nut socket to avoid rounding. The old hose is removed and a new one is fitted carefully — the hose routing is important, or it may chafe against other components and wear through.

After fitting the new hose the brake system is carefully bled. All air bubbles must be removed before the car is safe to drive — incomplete bleeding causes a soft pedal and weak braking. A pressure bleeder is the most effective way to get fluid through the whole system.

Why do brake hoses crack?

Rubber material ageing is the primary cause. The combination of frost, UV and oil residues weakens rubber properties over years. A brake hose chafing against a chassis component can also generate slow cracks that widen over time. Winter is particularly hard — frozen rubber cracks under small stresses and snow/ice-induced abrasion accelerates wear. Regular visual inspection catches damage in time.
