When caliper repair is worthwhile

Brake caliper repair is a good option when the fault is contained — typically seized slide pins, worn seals or a leaking piston. The repair is done with the caliper still on the car without a full replacement, making it 30–50 % cheaper. Repair suits a caliper whose body is in good condition — no cracks or severe rust damage. If the caliper has been stuck for a long time and the brake disc has overheated, the body can be warped or cracked, in which case replacement is the only option. Thorough inspection before deciding on repair is important.

Why do calipers seize again after repair?

If a caliper seizes again after repair, the cause is usually brake fluid condition. Moist fluid corrodes the piston surface and causes new seizure within months. That's why brake fluid must always be changed during caliper repair. If the caliper body was already badly corroded, even small moisture sources can cause a new fault — in that case full caliper replacement is the only lasting solution.
