When a window regulator needs replacing
A window regulator is an electric-motor-driven mechanism that raises and lowers the side window. The mechanism is either cable-based or gear-based. Cable type is more common and weaker — the cable can fail and the glass falls into the door. Symptoms: the window doesn't rise or lower, the motor turns but the window doesn't move, holding the window up requires pressing, or clunking inside the door while moving the window. On modern cars the window can enter "safety mode" if sensors detect resistance — this can also be caused by freezing.
