When automatic oil needs changing

Automatic gearbox oil (ATF) serves multiple purposes — as lubricant, hydraulic fluid and coolant. That's why it ages faster than manual gearbox oil. Manufacturers give change intervals of 60 000–100 000 km, but if the car tows often or sits in city traffic, 60 000 km is already the limit. Symptoms of old oil: jerks on shifts, slow response, gearbox overheating, dark or burnt-smelling oil. If the oil has never been changed by 150 000 km, the gearbox is likely already damaged internally and a proper condition check is warranted before an oil change.

How automatic oil is changed

Traditional change: the sump is removed, oil is drained and the filter is renewed. This renews about 50 % of the total gearbox oil — the rest stays in the converter and hydraulic circuit. On modern gearboxes measuring the oil level requires the car warm and on a level surface — too much oil causes foaming, too little causes damage. Dynamic flushing is the more thorough method. Specialist equipment connects to the gearbox oil cooler line and feeds new oil in while the old is pumped out. This method renews up to 95 % of the oil. After the change an adaptation drive is run via the diagnostic tool so the gearbox learns the new oil.

Why is neglecting automatic oil disastrous?

The multi-dimensional hydraulic system inside an automatic gearbox is extremely sensitive to oil quality. Aged oil's additives deplete, and instead metal-sediment plus oil sediment forms and blocks fine hydraulic passages. When passages are blocked, individual clutches don't receive pressure and shifts happen late — leading to internal gearbox wear. An oil change every 60 000 km is a hundred-euro investment that saves a gearbox rebuild (5 000–10 000 €).
