When a CV boot needs replacing
A CV joint boot is a rubber bellows structure that keeps joint grease in and dirt out. The boot is exposed to constant movement and weather conditions, and over time it can split or tear. Causes: frost-induced embrittlement, stone impact while driving, thread fatigue at the clamp location, or small cutting damage from a large work angle. Repair is worthwhile as soon as damage is noticed. If the boot is still tightly in place with just a small crack, early replacement saves the whole driveshaft. If the boot has been open for a while and grease has spread out, dirt and water have already damaged the internal balls and the whole driveshaft needs replacing.
How a CV boot is replaced
The driveshaft is removed from the car — from the wheel hub and at the inner end from the gearbox (or at least from an intermediate shaft). The old boot is removed and the joint is cleaned of old grease and debris. The joint surface is inspected for grooves and scratches — if any are present, the whole joint needs replacement. The new boot is threaded onto the shaft and fitted. Special joint grease is added in the precise correct amount — too much or too little causes issues. Clamp bands are installed to specification (typically 20–40 Nm), since a loose band lets grease out and an overtightened band splits the boot. The driveshaft is refitted and the test drive monitors joint noises.

Why do CV boots tear?
Beyond normal ageing (UV and frost harden the rubber), a common tearing cause is a kerb strike. When the car is driven hard into a kerb at full lock, the boot stretches to an extreme and tears. A poorly fitted clamp (too loose or the wrong type) can also let grease out and the boot begins to rub against the joint housing. Quality manufacturer OE boots considerably outlast aftermarket copies — especially in tough Finnish winter conditions.
