When a brake service is worthwhile

A brake service is not the same as pad replacement — it's a thorough inspection and service of the entire brake system in which the calipers are opened, the sliding surfaces are cleaned and lubricated and the fluid is changed. It's recommended at least every two years, particularly in Finland where road salt quickly corrodes caliper sliding parts. The first sign the service is needed is brake squeal or mild drag while driving, even when the pads still have plenty of friction material left. The symptom often comes from seized caliper slides — the pads can't return far enough from the disc and they rub constantly. Another sign is uneven braking force across an axle — the car pulls to one side on stopping. After winter a brake service is especially worthwhile: meltwater, salt and grit will have caused significant wear to moving parts. In summer heat can also tire rubber components, so a spring service before the holiday season is an increasingly popular trend.

Why don't the brakes feel as even as they used to?

The most common cause of uneven braking is a seized caliper slide pin: the pads can't return from the disc, so one pad drags continuously while the other barely touches. This causes pull to one side on braking and heat only on one side, which in turn accelerates uneven tyre wear. Another common fault is a swollen brake hose that prevents fluid returning to the master cylinder — the brakes stay partially applied slightly longer than they should, and a burning smell rises from the disc. A third cause is an ABS unit or sensor fault that biases brake force unevenly between axles. A thorough brake service reveals all these faults and steers the correct repair.
