Additional lights improve visibility in conditions where a car's standard lights aren't enough — darkness, fog, spring ice. Modern LED technology provides many times the light output of older halogen lights, with low power consumption. Law permits driving lights that can be activated only as separate main beam.

Installation is recommended for rural driving, winter use, outdoor activities and generally active driving. MOT requirements must be met — for example light output, mounting location and wiring are strictly regulated.

How additional lights are installed

Lights are attached to a mounting bracket, usually under the front bumper or on a roof rack. Wiring is routed to the engine bay to the battery via a relay — the relay isolates the additional lights circuit from the car's electrical system and protects it from overload. A switch is installed on the dashboard or along with the light switch.

After installation the lights are aimed — too-high lights dazzle oncoming traffic and lead to an MOT fail. Testing is done in darkness to confirm correct light pattern and distance. A certification is given if required for the MOT.

Critical factors in selection: power (watts per light), beam shape (driving light is narrow beam, fog light is wide beam), IP rating (water resistance), mountability (options on your car) and MOT approval.
