When the power steering pump needs replacing

The hydraulic power steering pump generates pressure to lighten steering rack motion. The pump is driven by the engine via a belt and circulates special power steering fluid (ATF or hydraulic oil). The pump's internal vanes or gears wear over time.

Symptoms of a faulty pump: steering feels heavy especially at low speed and when parking, whining noise during turns, power steering fluid is darkened or brown, or a visible fluid leak under the pump. Modern cars often have electric power steering which doesn't need a pump or fluid — different symptoms apply.

How a pump is replaced

The old power steering fluid pipe is disconnected and fluid is drained. The belt tensioner is loosened and the belt is slipped off the pump pulley. Mounting bolts are undone and the pump is removed — a bracket is released if it shares the mounting.

The new pump is fitted, the belt is refitted and the tensioner sets correct tension. The system is filled with fresh power steering fluid and bled by turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times — this removes air bubbles. The test drive confirms light, smooth steering.

Premature pump damage is typically due to fluid neglect. As the fluid ages and collects contaminants, the pump's internal vanes wear faster.
