When the power steering pump needs replacing

The hydraulic power steering pump generates pressure to lighten steering rack motion. The pump is driven by the engine via a belt and circulates special power steering fluid (ATF or hydraulic oil). The pump's internal vanes or gears wear over time. Symptoms of a faulty pump: steering feels heavy especially at low speed and when parking, whining noise during turns, power steering fluid is darkened or brown, or a visible fluid leak under the pump. Modern cars often have electric power steering which doesn't need a pump or fluid — different symptoms apply.
