Starter Motor Replacement in Vantaa

A clicking noise when starting is a classic starter motor symptom — replacement restores quick starting immediately.

If the car takes several attempts to start, the fault is most often in the starter solenoid rather than the motor itself.

When a starter motor needs replacing

The starter motor cranks the engine on start-up. It receives current from the battery via the solenoid, which simultaneously pushes the starter's pinion gear into the flywheel ring gear. A starter fault produces symptoms every start: a clicking noise but no cranking, slow cranking even with a charged battery, or no cranking at all. Causes include worn brush contact, a seized solenoid, worn pinion gear teeth or a broken shaft bearing. The solenoid can fail on its own, so the motor doesn't always need replacement — a single click without cranking is its typical symptom.

How a starter motor is replaced

The battery negative is disconnected first. The starter motor is at the lower part of the engine, usually next to the gearbox. The thick power cables (positive from the battery and the solenoid control wire) are disconnected. Motor mounting bolts are undone — these are usually very long and require a specialist socket for access. The new starter is installed with new mounting bolts. The flywheel ring gear teeth are checked at the same time — ring gear damage shows up in the new motor within a few thousand kilometres. Cables are reconnected, especially the positive cable tightened firmly. The battery is reconnected and starting is tested multiple times.

Why do starter motors fail?

The most common starter fault is brush wear. Starter brushes are a copper-carbon composite, and over time they wear and make poor contact with the commutator. Cold weather accelerates wear because a cold engine demands more torque from the starter. Another common fault is solenoid seizure — moisture and corrosion can stop the solenoid from retracting quickly. An older car with a weak battery forces the starter to crank longer, which heats it up and significantly shortens its life.
