When a release bearing needs replacing
The gearbox release bearing is a rotating bearing that transfers clutch pedal pressure to the clutch pressure plate. It only works when the pedal is pressed, so it wears with manual-car usage. In city driving the release bearing is loaded hundreds of times per hour. Symptoms of a worn release bearing: whining or grinding noise when the clutch pedal is pressed, noise disappears when the clutch is released, and a heavily worn bearing causes pedal vibration. The fault can also cause uneven clutch engagement, which wears the clutch disc faster.
How a release bearing is replaced
The gearbox must be removed from the engine to replace the release bearing — the same work as a clutch replacement. That's why it's always economically worthwhile to also change the clutch at the same time. The old release bearing is removed from the clutch pressure assembly and the new one is fitted. On modern cars the release bearing can be hydraulic (Concentric Slave Cylinder, CSC) — this combines a traditional mechanical release bearing and hydraulic slave into a single unit. CSC replacement is more expensive, but the new unit lasts considerably longer than a separate mechanical bearing.

Why do release bearings wear?
Release bearing life depends on driving style. "Riding the clutch" — common in city driving — keeps the release bearing spinning constantly and halves its life. Poor clutch fluid in the hydraulic system can also cause slow slave cylinder issues that translate into release bearing wear. Typical release bearing life is 100 000–150 000 km, but it can be as short as 50 000 km with poor driving style.
