When a xenon bulb needs replacing

A xenon bulb (HID, High Intensity Discharge) produces light from a gas discharge at high voltage (about 25 000 V). Bulb life is 5 000–10 000 hours, or about 5–10 years. An ageing bulb may change colour (white to reddish) or flicker before going out.

Xenon bulb replacement is much more complex than halogen. Never touch the bare glass with bare fingers — grease causes premature burn-out. The control unit (ballast) may also be faulty, in which case just a bulb swap isn't enough.

How a xenon bulb is replaced

The bulb sits at the rear of the headlight assembly. The electrical connector is removed carefully, as it carries high voltage. The bulb retainer is opened and the old bulb is removed wearing clean gloves. The new bulb is fitted without touching the glass with bare fingers.

After installation the lights are switched on — a correctly working xenon bulb lights in a few seconds and produces intense white light. If the light doesn't come on or flickers, the fault is in the ballast. Beam aim is checked against a light wall — xenon lights are powerful and mis-aimed they dazzle oncoming drivers.

Why do xenon bulbs burn out repeatedly?

Premature burn-out most commonly comes from a ballast issue — it can deliver overvoltage or too-low voltage to the bulb. Another common cause is grease sticking to the bulb's glass during installation — hot spots burst and the bulb shatters. Moisture ingress into the headlight housing is a third common cause — seals that fail let water in and short the bulb.
