If, for example, a pre-purchase inspection is requested, the checklist is broader and includes items such as a cold-start of the engine, testing of every function and a full underbody review.

During the actual work the mechanic proceeds systematically and stays in contact with the customer by phone or email if the fault turns out to be larger than expected. Every decision (carry on with the current plan, replace a part or repair it) is made jointly with the customer, and the cost estimate is updated accordingly.

When the work is finished the car is walked through with the customer: which jobs were done, which parts were replaced, what observations came up along the way and what may need attention in the future. Used parts can be taken away on request, and the invoice includes an itemised breakdown of hours worked and parts supplied. That way the customer knows exactly what they have paid for.
