When MOT service is needed
MOT service is a preventive inspection where the car is reviewed against the same criteria as the official MOT. This reveals potential fail reasons in advance, so they can be fixed before the MOT — avoiding a retest and its fee. Recommendation: do MOT service about 2 weeks before the actual MOT. This allows time for any repairs. The most common fail reasons: worn brake pads or discs, chassis play (control arm, ball joints), light aim or burnt bulbs, and emissions readings.
How MOT service proceeds
The inspection is done to the MOT requirement checklist. The car is raised on a lift and chassis parts are tested for play and wear. Brakes are inspected visually and with a pedal test. All lights and their aim are tested. Emissions are measured on a dynamic engine — CO, HC and NOx values are compared against allowed limits. Body and structural corrosion damage is checked. Finally the customer receives a report detailing everything observed — green for OK, yellow for warning, red for fail.
