When a heater core needs replacing
The heater core is a small radiator behind the dashboard that transfers coolant heat into the cabin. It can leak over time — typically from the aluminium-core-to-plastic-shell seam or from corrosion-induced holes. Symptoms of a faulty heater core: cabin is damp and windows fog easily, cabin carpet has a sweet smell (coolant), the blower doesn't produce warm air, or coolant level drops without external leaks.
How a heater core is replaced
The work is extensive: the dashboard must be partly or fully dismantled to reach the core. Dashboard removal includes air ducts, radio, blower cover and often the steering wheel and airbag components. Then the core is removed via mounting bolts and coolant hoses are disconnected. The new core is fitted with new O-rings, hoses are reconnected and the dashboard is reassembled. The cooling system is filled and bled — heating should produce warm air at idle. The test drive monitors heating evenness and any leaks.

Why do heater cores leak?
External rusting of the heater core is caused by poor coolant — when its corrosion-inhibition capacity is depleted, the core starts eating from inside. The core can also be damaged by freezing — if coolant has too much water (wrong mix ratio), ice expands and splits the aluminium. Regular coolant change with the correct mix is the best prevention.
