When a heater motor needs replacing
The heater system has several electric motors: the large blower motor (circulation) and smaller servo motors that control air direction flaps (warm/cold blend, up/down direction, recirculation/fresh). When one of these fails, heating adjustment no longer works normally. Symptoms: temperature doesn't change despite the control knob, airflow always comes from the same direction (can't change), loud tapping noise from the dashboard area, or an engine warning with an air conditioning fault code. Diagnostics reveals which servo is faulty.
How a heater motor is replaced
The motor or servo motor sits in the heater housing behind the dashboard. Access requires partial dashboard dismantling — glove box, centre console or even the whole dashboard. The old motor is unplugged and unclipped from its mount. The new motor is fitted, wires are reconnected and the linkage is aligned correctly. The diagnostic tool calibrates the motor — it learns the flap's end positions and centres. Testing turns the control knob through its full range, confirming airflow and temperature change correctly.

Internal gears in servo motors can wear over time — this causes tapping noise and motor seizure in a certain position. Electrical corrosion is another common cause, particularly in older cars. Excessive force (when a flap is stuck from a dirty seal) can also burn the motor's copper winding.
