When a block heater is worthwhile
A block heater warms the engine before starting, easing cold starts, reducing wear and saving fuel. In Finnish winter a block heater is practically essential — even at -10 °C the engine consumes double the fuel compared to a warmed-up engine. Options: DEFA heater (most common in Finland, screws into the block) and Calix heater (usually fitted with a coil). Both work the same way — an electric element heats coolant that circulates inside the engine. Typical heating power is 400–600 W.
How a block heater is installed
The heater is fitted in a suitable location on the engine — either in the side of the cylinder block (threaded fitting) or in a coolant hose. Coolant is drained or at least lowered below the heater install point. The heater is fitted with a tight threaded or hose connection. Electrical wiring is routed through the bumper or under the front wheel arch to a socket — where the car can be plugged in. After installation the cooling system is filled and bled. Testing is done by switching the heater on and confirming that coolant starts circulating and the engine block warms.

How long should a block heater be used?
Heating power is maximum at 1–2 hours — longer use doesn't warm the engine further, it just wastes electricity. Sensible use time: 30 min at -5 °C, 1 h at -15 °C, 2 h at -25 °C. Optimal heating control is via a timer or smart controller that switches power on automatically 1–2 h before morning departure.
