When cabin air filter needs replacing

The cabin air filter cleans air entering the cabin from dust, exhaust, pollen and other particles. It's normally replaced annually or every 15 000–20 000 km. Cars doing a lot of city driving should have it replaced more frequently.

Symptoms of a blocked filter: AC performance drops, less air reaches the cabin at high blower speed, unpleasant or musty smell in the cabin, and windows fog faster in winter. For allergy sufferers the filter is worth replacing as spring pollen season begins.

How cabin air filter is replaced

The filter is usually behind the glove box or under the dashboard. The glove box is released from its clips and the filter housing lid is opened. The old filter is lifted out — dust can fall from it, so the old filter is wrapped in paper immediately.

The filter housing is blown dust-free and the new filter is fitted the right way (usually airflow arrow pointing upward). The housing lid is closed and the glove box is refitted. Air conditioning is switched on and airflow strength is checked — it should be noticeably improved.

Why shouldn't the cabin air filter be neglected?

A blocked filter affects more than air quality. The blower motor has to work harder, shortening its life. Air conditioning evaporator capacity drops, which raises fuel consumption. Dust accumulates in the cabin and mats and trim get dirty faster. Annual replacement at 40–60 € saves all these problems.
