Ignition Coil Replacement in Vantaa

A faulty ignition coil makes the engine misfire — replacement restores smooth running.

Ignition coils often wear at the same time — replacing just one is rarely a lasting fix; it's better to renew the whole set.

When an ignition coil needs replacing

An ignition coil steps the car's 12 V up to 30 000–45 000 V of ignition voltage, with which the spark plug ignites the mixture. The coil heats and cools with every ignition — copper windings fatigue and eventually insulation starts to leak. The result is a misfire on a single cylinder, which shows up as a rough-running engine, power loss and an engine warning with codes P0300–P0304. Symptoms of a faulty ignition coil: the engine shakes at idle, acceleration jerks, fuel consumption rises and popping noises can be heard from the exhaust. On modern cars the engine ECU can cut fuel to faulty cylinders to protect the catalyst.

How an ignition coil is replaced

Coils sit on top of the rocker cover, directly above the spark plugs (coil-on-plug). The wiring connector is unplugged and the mounting bolt (one per coil) is undone. The coil is lifted carefully straight up — sideways movement can damage its rubber seal. New coils are fitted onto the dry plug tip. During installation we confirm the coil seats fully around the plug — any gap causes a misfire. The wiring is reconnected and the hold-down bolt is torqued to 5–8 Nm. The engine is started and the diagnostic tool confirms misfire counts are at zero.

Why do ignition coils keep failing?

The most common cause of premature coil failure is worn spark plugs. When the plug's electrode gap is too large, the coil has to produce a higher than normal voltage to generate a spark — this stresses the copper winding and eventually burns it out. That's why plugs and coils should be replaced at the same time. Another common cause is heat stress: high engine bay temperatures age the coil's electronics, and if engine cooling isn't in good order, coils can fail already at 50 000 km.
