Timing Chain Replacement in Vantaa

A stretched timing chain can jump a tooth and destroy the engine — don't leave replacement to the last minute.

Timing chains aren't truly maintenance-free despite what many manufacturers claim — have yours inspected after 150 000 km.

When the timing chain needs replacing

The timing chain transfers rotation from the crankshaft to the camshafts so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment relative to piston movement. The chain was originally meant to last the engine's entire life, but in practice — especially in VAG, BMW and Ford engines — it can start stretching as early as 100 000 km. A stretched chain throws the timing out, causing rough running, the engine warning light to come on and, in the worst case, the chain jumping a tooth — valves then strike the pistons and the engine is seriously damaged. The most common symptom is a metallic rattling noise on cold start, coming from the slack chain and its tensioner. The noise shortens or disappears once oil pressure builds and the tensioner receives oil. If a fault code points to a timing error (e.g. P0016, P0017), the chain must be replaced before the fault becomes irreversible.

How the timing chain is replaced

The engine is brought to TDC (top dead centre) through the top of the engine and the camshafts are locked with the manufacturer's specialist tools. All the components in the timing cover area — rocker cover, water pump pulley, crankshaft pulley — are removed so the new chain kit can be threaded into place without any timing marks getting mixed up. The old chain, tensioner, guides and VVT actuator are inspected and every worn part is renewed at the same time. The new chain kit is installed with oil applied and the tensioner is pre-tensioned per specification. The engine is turned through two full revolutions by hand to verify valve clearance, piston motion timing and tensioner operation. Finally the diagnostic tool reads crankshaft-to-camshaft correlation, the engine is started, and a long test drive confirms the absence of metallic noises and that performance is back to normal.

Why do timing chains stretch prematurely?

The main cause of premature chain stretch is extended oil change intervals and the wrong oil grade. Modern timing chains are lubrication-dependent: the oil film keeps the chain's links slippery and reduces metal-to-metal wear. If the oil is aged or doesn't meet the manufacturer's specification (e.g. BMW LL-04, VW 504 00 / 507 00), link wear accelerates and the chain begins to stretch. Short-trip city driving and cold starts are also particularly stressful on chains because oil pressure rises slowly and the tensioner doesn't get to work at full force. Regular 10 000–15 000 km oil changes with the correct oil are the best prevention.
