When fault code reading is worthwhile
When the engine, ABS, air-conditioning or airbag warning light comes on, your car has stored one or more fault codes. Reading them is the fastest way to find out which system has the problem — before guessing or letting a workshop start swapping parts. Code reading is also a smart move before the MOT. If an active code is present on OBD, the MOT is halted before the actual measurements start and you'll have to pay for a re-test. A €35 pre-check saves the wasted trip and the second MOT fee. Buying a used car? Active codes will tell you immediately whether the seller has been straight with you. And if the car has just been serviced but the warning light is still on, code reading reveals which system the service didn't actually fix.

Why clearing the code doesn't fix the fault
A fault code is a symptom, not the disease. Clearing the code turns off the warning light but doesn't actually repair anything — the control unit sees the same condition again on the next drive and lights it back up. Sometimes that takes days, sometimes minutes. Leaving a fault unrepaired can also make things worse. A catalyst-efficiency code (P0420) is often a lambda sensor problem, and ignoring it can lead to actual catalyst damage from unburnt fuel. A misfire code (P0300) isn't always plugs or coils — it can be an intake leak or a weak fuel pump, and continuous misfire eventually destroys the ignition system and the catalytic converter. That's why we read the codes before clearing them and explain what they typically mean. The customer decides whether to repair now, step up to extended diagnostics, or wait and watch — but it's an informed decision, not a guess.
