When a windshield needs replacing

The windshield is part of the car's load-bearing structure. Damaged glass weakens body rigidity in a crash and can stop the passenger airbag from deploying correctly — the airbag leans against the windshield as it opens, and a cracked pane won't take the impact.

Replacement is needed when the crack is longer than 10 cm, when the damage is in the driver's line of sight, when the glass is damaged in several places, or when a stone chip can no longer be repaired. The MOT also won't pass a crack that runs into the driver's field of view. A small chip (smaller than a 2 € coin) can usually be repaired, which is far cheaper than replacing the whole pane — and glass insurance often covers the repair with no excess.

How the windshield is replaced

We start by protecting the interior carefully. The old glass is removed with professional tools so the body and trim aren't damaged. The adhesive surfaces are cleaned and prepared precisely — this step is critical for a watertight, durable bond.

We use only OE-equivalent glass from recognised brands (Pilkington, Saint-Gobain, AGC). The new pane is fitted with high-quality, fast-curing adhesive. If the windshield carries sensors — rain sensor, lane assist, forward camera, ADAS — we calibrate them after fitting, following the manufacturer's procedure. Adhesive is typically left to cure for 1–2 hours before the car is handed back. If you have glass insurance, we bill the insurer directly so you only pay the excess.

Why windshields crack

Accepted Answer

The most common cause is stone impact — a small chip spreads into a crack as temperatures change, especially in winter when the car is warmed up from cold. Another common cause is body flex: after hitting a pothole or a kerb, stress can crack the glass days or weeks later. Poor previous fitting (too thin a bead of adhesive, dirty surfaces) can also lead to cracks appearing years on.
