When a windshield needs replacing
The windshield is part of the car's load-bearing structure. Damaged glass weakens body rigidity in a crash and can stop the passenger airbag from deploying correctly — the airbag leans against the windshield as it opens, and a cracked pane won't take the impact. Replacement is needed when the crack is longer than 10 cm, when the damage is in the driver's line of sight, when the glass is damaged in several places, or when a stone chip can no longer be repaired. The MOT also won't pass a crack that runs into the driver's field of view. A small chip (smaller than a 2 € coin) can usually be repaired, which is far cheaper than replacing the whole pane — and glass insurance often covers the repair with no excess.
