When a silencer needs replacing
A silencer (muffler) dampens exhaust sound before the gas exits. It contains internal baffles and sound-absorbing material. Over time it rusts from the inside out, and eventually a hole forms through the casing. Symptoms of a failing silencer: loud exhaust note (rising with acceleration), metallic vibration or rattling from the hanger, uneven engine power and an MOT dB limit fail (over 94 dB). Small holes can sometimes be welded, but a heavily corroded silencer must be replaced completely.
How a silencer is replaced
The car is raised on a lift and the silencer is separated from the exhaust pipe. Joint flange bolts are often rust-welded — they may need heat or an angle grinder. The hanger rubbers are detached and the old silencer is taken away. A new silencer is installed with new hangers and bolts. New gaskets are fitted at the joints, and the exhaust shape is confirmed to clear the underbody (so it doesn't tap on chassis parts). The engine is started and checked to ensure exhaust sound is quiet and even across the rev range. At the MOT the dB meter confirms the exhaust is below 94 dB.

Why do silencers rust fast in Finland?
Finnish road salt is the silencer's biggest enemy. Condensate inside the silencer mixes with salt and drives rapid internal corrosion. Exhaust heat only evaporates moisture during motorway driving — on city drives the silencer never warms enough and moisture remains. Short daily trips are therefore the worst cause of rust. Stainless steel silencers last many times longer than carbon steel ones, but their price is also higher.
