When EGR cleaning is worthwhile

EGR cleaning is the first attempt when the valve starts to misbehave — before replacement. Symptoms are the same as for replacement: rough running, power loss, engine warning and black smoke. If the valve is still mechanically healthy and its electrical control hasn't failed, cleaning removes the soot layer and restores operation. Cleaning suits valves that haven't been pushed to the extreme. If the engine has been in limp mode multiple times, the valve's electric motor may already be damaged. Then cleaning no longer helps and a new valve is needed. An initial diagnosis determines whether cleaning or replacement is appropriate.

How an EGR is cleaned

The valve is removed from the intake manifold and taken to the workshop. The old soot layer is first soaked in strong cleaner for several hours. After that the internals are cleaned with compressed air and brushes, and mechanical movement is tested by hand — a healthy valve's shaft moves freely without sticking. During cleaning the intake manifold's soot build-up is also inspected and, if needed, the whole manifold or its small tubes are cleaned. After installation the diagnostic tool runs an EGR adaptation and monitors flow values under different loads — successful cleaning shows up as immediately restored performance.

Why doesn't cleaning always work?

Cleaning won't help if the internal electric motor has burnt out or the pintle shaft is already worn. The valve's internal diaphragm can also be torn, in which case the valve leaks and can't hold correct values even after cleaning. In those cases the only solution is fitting a new valve. A thorough diagnosis usually tells us in advance which is needed — cleaning or replacement — so no unnecessary work is done.
