When a lower ball joint needs replacing

The lower ball joint links the lower control arm to the wheel hub. It allows suspension and steering movement while supporting the car's weight. When the ball joint wears, play develops that's felt in steering and ride. A badly worn joint can fail suddenly and the wheel can detach from the car. Symptoms: metallic click in corners at low speed, steering play, uneven top-edge tyre wear and sometimes a knock on braking. At inspection the wheel can be rocked at the hub up and down to confirm play.

How a lower ball joint is replaced

The car is raised on a lift and the wheel is removed. The ball joint's split-pin bolt is undone and a dedicated tool (ball joint puller) separates the joint from the hub. On some models the ball joint is pressed out of the lower control arm with a hydraulic press — this needs specialist formers. The new joint is pressed in and its fit is checked. The split-pin bolt is torqued to specification and the split pin is installed in its position. Wheel alignment is essential — otherwise steering angles are left incorrect.

Why do ball joints fail?

The primary fault mode for a ball joint is boot tearing, which lets dirt into the joint. Without grease the balls and seat wear quickly, and eventually the joint can seize or fail. Kerb strikes at full lock can bend the internal parts, and ageing (frost, salt) accelerates wear. Regular chassis inspection is the best way to catch the fault early.
