When a chassis inspection is worthwhile
Chassis condition directly affects driving safety, comfort and tyre wear. In Finnish conditions chassis components are exposed to road salt, frost and bumpy roads, all of which wear parts considerably faster than in, say, Central Europe. That makes a routine annual inspection worthwhile. A chassis inspection is particularly recommended: before a long holiday trip, when buying a used car, when preparing a car for sale, in the month before an MOT, or whenever you notice strange noises or feel in the vehicle. It's also a good idea to have the chassis checked after a heavy impact (kerb, deep pothole), even if there's no visible damage. The inspection has several parts: a visual check for rust and damage, a mechanical test of joint play and function, and an assessment of component wear. On the basis of these we compile a report documenting every finding and giving recommendations for any repairs — where relevant, with a timeline (urgent, within 6 months, next inspection).

Why does a chassis wear faster than expected?
Accelerated wear often comes from a cumulative collection of events that wouldn't individually have caused damage but together wear parts more. Typical causes include repeated deep potholes in a Finnish spring, which fatigue shocks and cause smaller impacts to bushings. Ice packed into wheel arches during winter can damage rubber and plastic components. Another common cause is the wrong driving style: tight turns at low speed wear ball joints and sharp cold braking stresses wheel bearings. A third cause is lower-quality copy parts fitted by a previous owner — their service life is typically 50–70 % of originals and isn't evident externally. Regular inspection uncovers such things and gives the chance to fix the problem before it spreads further.
