When a bushing needs replacing
A bushing is a rubber part that links the control arm to the car's body and allows controlled motion. Over time the rubber cracks and stiffens, so motion no longer absorbs and even small road irregularities transfer straight to the car. The most common symptoms: knocks at low speed on bumpy roads, steering float, uneven tyre wear and noticeable shake on braking. Bushing damage can be confirmed visually — cracks or separated rubber are visible at inspection.
How a bushing is replaced
The control arm is removed from the car and taken to the workshop. A specialist hydraulic press pushes the old bushing out. The new bushing is fitted using the same tool — incorrect orientation damages the bushing during installation. After installation the arm is reinstalled in the car and wheel alignment is done at the end. Bushings should always be installed symmetrically on both sides so the car's behaviour stays balanced.
