When lowering is worthwhile

Car lowering means reducing ride height either with shorter springs or with coilovers (height-adjustable). Lowering improves appearance (smaller gap between wheel and arch), lowers the centre of gravity and can improve cornering grip. For safety reasons lowering shouldn't be excessive — a car sitting too low picks up more underbody scrapes and wears tyres unevenly. Lowering makes sense when: the original suspension is worn and due for renewal, the car's look is being updated, or better driving dynamics are desired. In Finnish conditions lowering is only recommended moderately (15–30 mm) — deeper lowering causes problems in winter and on poor roads.

How lowering is done

The suspension is stripped on the front and rear axles. Old springs are removed and new lowering springs are installed. Shock absorbers are inspected — shorter dampers are recommended on a lowered car, because original units can bottom out more easily. With coilover installation the whole suspension module is replaced, and height is adjusted by threading the body mount. Wheel alignment is always essential after lowering — otherwise tyres wear unevenly and the car behaves unpredictably. Camber, caster and toe are set for the lowered ride height. The test drive confirms the car doesn't strike the underbody on ordinary roads and that driving feels steady.

What problems can lowering cause?

Excessive lowering causes several problems: CV joint wear (larger angle under load), premature shock absorber failure (shorter travel on bumps), underbody scrapes that can damage the sump, gearbox casing or exhaust manifold. Wheel alignment may end up outside the original tolerances, so tyres wear unevenly and the car pulls to one side. A car sitting too low can't be raised with a standard workshop jack. A good lowering is therefore 15–30 mm — giving a clear visual difference without functional drawbacks.
