When an air filter needs replacing

The air filter cleans incoming engine air from dust, plant matter and insects. When the filter is blocked the engine doesn't get enough air and the consequences are loss of power, rising fuel consumption, darkening exhaust and eventually an engine management light. The typical interval is 30 000 km or annually. In dusty conditions — dirt roads, building sites, spring pollen — the filter should be checked more often. The mass airflow sensor (MAF) also gets contaminated if the filter isn't up to the job, and its replacement costs many times more than a preventive filter change.

How an air filter is replaced

The air filter housing sits in the engine bay, often close to the mass airflow sensor. The housing lid clips (usually clips or bolts) are undone and the old filter is lifted out. The housing is vacuumed clean of dust, leaves and any mouse nests. The new filter is fitted the right way up (airflow direction marked on it) and the housing is closed tightly. Housing leaks are just as bad as a blocked filter — they let dirty air into the engine. The engine is started and run is monitored — the mass airflow reading should immediately be in the correct range.

Why do air filters clog quickly?

Filter service life depends on driving conditions. Gravel or dirt roads accelerate clogging several-fold. The location of the car's air intake also matters: a front-low inlet pulls in more dust than a high-mounted one. A poor air box seal or leaking intake pipe also lets dirty air bypass the filter, so instead of being caught by the filter medium the dirt travels straight into the engine. Proper pipe inspection during a filter change is always part of good service.
