Coolant Change in Vantaa

Aged coolant no longer protects the engine — replacement every 4–6 years is essential.

Always use the coolant type recommended by the manufacturer — mixing causes gel-like deposits.

When coolant needs changing

Coolant isn't just water: it contains glycol and corrosion inhibitors that protect the engine's aluminium components from corrosion. These inhibitors deplete over time, and after 4–6 years the fluid no longer protects the system — the water pump, radiator and even the cylinder head begin to corrode. Contaminated coolant shows as a brown or cloudy light-green colour. A chemical test strip (pH indicator) can quickly reveal whether the fluid is still alkaline (good) or acidic (change immediately). Manufacturers recommend changing either on a time basis (4 years) or mileage basis (60 000–100 000 km).

How coolant is changed

The engine must be cold. The lower hose is opened and the old coolant is drained into a container. If needed the cooling system is flushed with a cleaning chemical running for 10–15 minutes, after which the flush is drained out. The system is filled with the correct coolant at the correct water ratio (typically 50/50). Bleeding is the most critical stage: the engine is run up to the temperature where the thermostat opens, and air pockets are bled through the expansion tank filler. Modern cars may have separate bleed valves on the cylinder head or near the heater core. Finally the system pressure is tested with a hand pump to confirm there are no leaks.

Why does coolant age?

The coolant's protective additives break down chemically with every cooling cycle. Heat loading and oxygen (which enters via the expansion tank vent) accelerate the decay. Mixing fluids from different manufacturers is the most common mistake: OAT and HOAT fluids aren't compatible and form a gel-like deposit that clogs the radiator's fine channels. Regular replacement with the right coolant keeps the system healthy for the car's entire life.
