Thermostat Replacement in Vantaa
A faulty thermostat leaves the engine either too cold or too hot — both shorten engine life.
If the engine won't reach normal operating temperature even on a long drive, the thermostat is stuck open.
Thermostat replacement pricing:
- Thermostat replacement – from 220 €
- Coolant renewal at the same time – 90 €
- Modern electronic thermostat – from 310 €
- New gasket and bolt set – included

When a thermostat needs replacing
The thermostat is the cooling system's thermal valve, keeping the engine at its optimum temperature (usually 88–95 °C). When cold the thermostat is closed and coolant circulates only inside the engine, warming it up faster. Once warm, the thermostat opens and lets coolant flow through the radiator. When it fails, it can get stuck either open (engine never warms up) or closed (engine overheats). A stuck-open thermostat leads to excessive fuel consumption, poor cabin heating in winter and carbon build-up in the engine. A stuck-closed thermostat leads to rapid overheating: the temperature gauge shoots up, the expansion tank may vent steam and the head gasket is at risk. In both cases replacement is a quick and affordable job compared to the consequences.
How a thermostat is replaced
Coolant is drained to below the level of the thermostat. The housing is usually located in the cylinder head or nearby at the top hose end. The housing bolts are undone and the old thermostat is removed along with its gasket. Sealing faces are cleaned thoroughly — residue from the old gasket will cause immediate leaks on the new one. The new thermostat is fitted the right way up: the bleed hole (a small hole or bleed valve) uppermost so trapped air can move to the top of the system. The housing is refitted with a new gasket to specified torque. The system is filled with fresh coolant and the airlock is bled with the engine running. Engine warm-up is monitored on the dashboard and on the temperature sensor via the diagnostic tool — a healthy thermostat holds the temperature steady between 88 and 95 °C.

Why does a thermostat jam?
Inside the thermostat is a wax pellet that expands as temperature rises, pushing the valve open. This mechanism wears over time, especially if there are impurities or rust sediment in the coolant. The most common causes of failure are coolant neglect — aged fluid no longer protects the thermostat's metal parts from corrosion — and high pressures in the cooling system caused by slight head gasket leaks allowing combustion gas into the system. Preventive thermostat replacement around every 150 000 km or at coolant changes is a cost-effective measure.
