When an oil pump needs replacing
The oil pump circulates engine oil from the sump to every lubrication point in the engine. It's the engine's single most critical component — without it the engine is destroyed in minutes. An oil pump fault is rare, but when it happens, the consequences are serious. Symptoms of a faulty oil pump: oil pressure warning light (usually slow warming), metallic knocking from a cold engine, engine management light with the oil pressure code and excessive oil consumption. If oil pressure drops below the critical level, the engine must be shut down immediately — even a few more minutes of driving can cause irreversible crankshaft bearing damage.
How an oil pump is replaced
The oil pump usually sits in the sump or the front of the engine. The sump is lowered and the old pump is removed via its mounting bolts. The oil pickup tube is inspected — metal flakes accumulating on it can hint at wider damage and warn that bearings also need checking. A new pump is fitted with a new gasket. The sump is refitted with a new gasket (or sealant per manufacturer spec). The engine is filled with fresh oil and a new filter. On start-up the oil pressure is monitored — it should rise into the normal range (2–6 bar) within a few seconds. If pressure doesn't build immediately, the engine must be shut down and investigated.

Why do oil pumps fail?
An oil pump is mechanically simple and usually lasts the engine's life. Its most common fault is a clogged pickup — if oil changes have been neglected for a long time, deposits build up in the sump and block the pickup screen. That causes rapid oil pressure loss. Another common fault is gear wear, particularly on VAG TSI engines where the chain-driven oil pump drive belt stretches and the pump stops delivering. Regular oil changes with the correct oil grade are critical to preventing both.
