When sump repair is worthwhile

Sumps are typically damaged by external impact — a kerb hit, a minor pothole, or a stone kicked up onto the undercarriage. If the damage area is small and the sump is steel, weld repair is a quick and cost-effective option. Repair is worthwhile when: the hole is under 2 cm diameter, the rest of the sump is in good shape, and the damage can be welded (not on a gasket joint). An aluminium sump is harder to weld but doable by an experienced welder.

Why do sumps get damaged?

Sump damage almost always comes from an external impact — deep potholes, kerbs and small objects on the road can puncture steel or crumple aluminium. When the sump is mounted low (sports cars, lowered cars) the risk is higher. Corrosion on an older car used on winter roads can also thin the sump bottom enough that a single stone can punch through. Regular underbody inspection and keeping the undercoating in good condition significantly reduce the risk.
