When a bearing needs replacing

Bearings are rotating parts that enable efficient power transfer and reduce friction. A car has many different bearings — wheel bearings, gearbox bearings, suspension bearings and bearings in components like the water pump or alternator. Each has its own service life and symptoms.

The most common symptom of a worn bearing is a whining or humming noise that rises with speed. A wheel bearing fault also feels as steering vibration or shakes depending on location. A gearbox bearing fault is heard as grinding noise during gear shifts. Any bearing fault should be fixed immediately because a failing bearing can cause wider damage.

How a bearing is replaced

The work varies greatly depending on which bearing. Wheel bearing replacement requires removing the wheel, brake disc and hub, with the bearing pressed in with a hydraulic press. Gearbox bearing replacement requires opening the gearbox — this is a significantly larger job.

In all cases the old bearing is carefully pressed out, mounting surfaces are cleaned and the new bearing is fitted in the correct orientation. Bearings usually receive grease during installation — without it the bearing wears immediately in use. The test drive confirms the whining is gone.

Why do bearings wear at different rates?

A bearing's life depends on load, lubrication and seal condition. Wheel bearings face Finnish road salt and therefore often wear faster than engine bay bearings. If the bearing's seal fails and water gets in, the bearing fails in a few months. Regular inspection and timely replacement extend bearing life many-fold.
