When the steering system needs servicing

The job of the steering system is to turn the front wheels precisely and safely in line with driver input at the wheel. Several parts can wear or fail — track rods, the rack's internal components, track rod ends, the power-steering pump or the electric steering motor.

The first sign of play is usually a vague feel at the wheel on straight-line driving — the car no longer tracks by itself and constantly needs correction. Another common symptom is a clunk or knock in the steering during rapid full-lock movements. On electric steering, a warning light can come on when the torque sensor or control unit detects a problem.

If the car behaves strangely at motorway speed — for example the steering "sleeps" for a moment before responding — it may be a more serious issue in the rack or track rod ends. That's a safety risk in an emergency and should be inspected immediately. Leaking fluid on hydraulic steering also produces heavy, imprecise steering feel.

How the steering system is repaired

Repair begins with a thorough steering inspection: the car is raised on a lift and, with two technicians working together, all joints are tested. One turns the wheel back and forth while the other observes play and knocks at every point. At the same time, hydraulic pressures are measured (on hydraulic systems) or fault codes are read from electric systems.

On hydraulic systems pump replacement requires fluid drainage and refitting of the belt. The new pump is filled with fluid and the system is bled by turning the wheel lock-to-lock until air bubbles vanish. When replacing track rods the work is always done in an axle pair so steering stays symmetrical.

Electric power steering (EPS) motors can be repaired or replaced. After any work they must be coded in via the diagnostic tool — without this the system doesn't recognise the new motor correctly. A torque sensor adaptation drives it to zero, and a test drive confirms that the steering is smooth, both light and accurate, at all speeds.

Why does steering start to feel loose?

Steering looseness typically comes from small amounts of play in several places at once. At the start each joint may only allow one or two millimetres of movement, but when play at the track rod ends, lower joints and steering knuckles is summed, the steering wheel's apparent movement can be 2–3 cm before the front wheels react. Corrosion is a typical cause in Finland — salt wears at the rack's outer tube and joint pin metal. Another common cause is fluid leakage from the steering rack, which loses internal lubrication and grinds the cogs against each other. Timely inspection spots these before they affect safety — joint replacement is almost always cheaper than a full rack replacement.
