When a sump needs replacing

Sump replacement is due when damage is so extensive that repair is no longer possible. Typically this means: multiple holes, the sump shape has been deformed enough to contact the crankshaft, rust has weakened the whole pan, or a previous weld repair has already failed. Weld repair is still an option, but in many cases a new sump is the better long-term economic choice. A new sump costs only slightly more than a high-quality weld repair, and provides total peace of mind. An aluminium sump resists rust better than a steel one, which is an advantage in Finland.

Why do sumps get damaged repeatedly?

If a new sump gets damaged repeatedly, the cause is usually driving style or vehicle setup. A lowered car is more prone to kerb impacts. If the car is often driven on poor roads, damage is inevitable. An undertray fitted below the sump can also redirect impact force to the wrong points — a well-designed undertray spreads force evenly, but cheap aftermarket guards don't always produce better results than the original pan. Assessing these factors is an important part of the conversation we have at replacement time.
