When a turbo service is worthwhile

Preventive turbo servicing is much cheaper than a full replacement. A service is timely when the first turbo symptoms start to appear: slight loss of power, a drop of oil below the turbo, or occasional blue smoke under acceleration. Based on mileage, servicing is also recommended after 150 000 km as a precaution, since bearing play is starting to grow but hasn't yet caused visible damage. During servicing every critical point is inspected: radial and axial shaft play, compressor and turbine wheel condition, geometry actuator movement and the state of the oil lines. This tells us whether the turbo can be rebuilt or requires replacement. Small issues such as a coked oil feed line or a stuck variable geometry mechanism are quick fixes during servicing and can save the turbo for tens of thousands of kilometres.

How a turbo service is done

The service begins with diagnostic tool readings: boost pressure values reported by the engine ECU, sensor adaptation values and fault code history all indicate in advance which part of the turbo may have an issue. After that the car is raised on a lift and a visual inspection is made for oil residue, rust damage and exhaust manifold cracks. If needed the turbo is removed and stripped down in the workshop. The compressor and turbine wheels are cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, bearings are measured with a micrometer and shaft play is checked against the manufacturer's limits. On diesels the variable geometry actuator motor is tested and the linkage is cleaned of carbon build-up. The oil feed pipe is replaced if it shows heat damage. After the service a long test drive is carried out during which boost pressure is measured at various loads, confirming the engine achieves full boost without lag.

Why does a turbo lose power over time?

Gradual power loss is usually due to a seized variable geometry mechanism. The vanes that direct exhaust gas onto the turbine become clogged over time with carbon and soot build-up. This restricts the adjustment range and boost pressure no longer builds properly. Another common cause is oil residue in the intake tract: if oil comes from the crankcase breather into the intake manifold, it collects in the intercooler and restricts airflow. Both issues are addressed quickly during servicing and the turbo doesn't have to fail completely. If service is delayed, bearings wear and the result is a full turbo replacement at many times the cost.
