When a track rod end needs replacing

The track rod end is a ball joint at the outer end of the track rod, connecting the rod to the steering knuckle. It's a smaller and lighter part than the full track rod but often wears faster because its ball joint is in direct contact with motion during steering. Symptoms: steering wheel play even at centre (a small deadband before the front wheels respond), uneven tyre wear (particularly on the inner edge), the car pulling to one side or imprecise driving feel. At the MOT, track rod end play is a common fail reason.

How a track rod end is replaced

The wheel is removed and the split-pin bolt at the track rod end (usually in a tapered nut) is undone. A dedicated tool (tie rod end puller) removes the old end from the knuckle without damage. Then the track rod end is unscrewed from the track rod. The new end is threaded on to the measured number of turns (so settings remain close to original). The joint is pressed into the knuckle and the split-pin bolt is torqued to specification. Wheel alignment is redone precisely.

Why do track rod ends wear?

Track rod end wear comes from use-driven motion. Every steering input turns the balls inside the ball joint, and over time the balls and seats wear. If the boot tears, the wear process accelerates many-fold. Typical life is 80 000–120 000 km, but a poorly maintained road can shorten it.
