When a track rod needs replacing

The track rod transmits steering rack movement to the wheels. It's a long metal tube with a joint at each end (inner end to the rack, outer end to the track rod end). The track rod's internal joint can wear and cause steering imprecision.

Symptoms: the car won't track straight by itself, steering wheel straight-ahead angle varies, tyres wear on the inner edge and a knock is heard at full lock. The fault is confirmed by lifting the car off the wheels and moving the track rod end — a healthy rod shouldn't show play.

How a track rod is replaced

Accepted Answer

The wheel is removed and possibly the track rod end too (to ease disassembly). The track rod's inner end is undone from the steering rack with a large socket — the rack is held firmly so it isn't damaged. A new track rod is fitted and the mounting end is torqued to the manufacturer's figure (typically 70–100 Nm).

After fitting, the track rod length is adjusted to the original length by measurement. Wheel alignment is essential — otherwise the car pulls to one side and tyres wear unevenly.

Why do track rods fail?

The track rod's internal joint is an extremely strong structure, but it can wear if the boot is damaged and lets dirt in. Another common cause is a kerb strike that can bend the track rod so steering no longer tracks straight. A third cause is corrosion — Finnish winter is harsh on metal tubes, and an old track rod can snap suddenly.
