Water Pump Replacement in Vantaa

A faulty water pump stops coolant circulation and leads to overheating — replace it on time.

If the water pump sits behind the timing belt, it's always replaced at belt service — you save thousands by combining the jobs.

When a water pump needs replacing

The water pump circulates coolant between the engine and the radiator. The impeller inside and its shaft seals wear over time. A leak usually starts at the seal, where coolant seeps out from under the pump housing and evaporates in engine heat — the only visible trace may be a falling coolant level plus a white, fine powdery film at the pump's base. A water pump can also fail mechanically: the impeller blades break off the shaft and coolant stops circulating. The result is sudden engine overheating, which may take just a few minutes before the gasket burns. For this reason manufacturers recommend preventive replacement of the water pump whenever the timing belt is renewed: both are in the same rotating system and dismantling them requires the same amount of labour.

Why do water pumps fail?

The most common failure mode is a shaft seal leak. This stems from coolant ageing: once corrosion-inhibition capability drops, the coolant starts eating away at internal metal components and the seal face erodes. Another common cause is an over-tensioned timing belt, which permanently loads the pump shaft and wears out the bearing. A third fault source is using the wrong coolant grade — coolants from different manufacturers can react with each other and form a gel-like deposit that clogs the impeller channel. Following the manufacturer's service intervals and using the correct coolant usually lets the water pump last the full life of the timing belt.
