Glow Plug Replacement in Vantaa

When glow plugs need replacing

A glow plug heats the diesel engine's combustion chamber at cold start so the fuel ignites at the first compression stroke. In cold weather without a working glow plug the engine won't start, or starts with heavy smoke and rough running. Glow plug service life is typically 80 000–120 000 km. Typical symptoms of a failed glow plug: hard starting in frost, white or blue smoke on cold start, rough idle when cold, and the engine management light with a glow plug fault code (P0380–P0385).

How glow plugs are replaced

The rocker cover or glow plug wiring is opened. Glow plugs sit usually next to the fuel injectors. Old plugs are unscrewed with a long specialist socket — a penetrating spray is applied around each plug and left to soak to keep the threads from tearing on removal. New plugs are fitted with copper paste on the threads and torqued (usually 8–10 Nm — very low torque because the cylinder head aluminium is easy to overstress). Wiring is reconnected, the engine is started and the diagnostic tool confirms all glow plug fault codes are cleared. The test drive checks cold-run smoothness.

Why do glow plugs seize?

A glow plug's thread sits in aluminium and is subjected to constant heat cycling and exhaust soot. Over years the thread can corrode or enough soot can accumulate that the plug snaps on removal. That's a major additional job — the broken plug has to be extracted with specialist tools and the cylinder head may have to come off. Preventive replacement every 80 000 km — before the plug is badly seized — is always the more cost-effective route.
