When a fuel pump needs replacing
A fuel pump moves fuel from the tank to the engine at a steady pressure. On petrol cars the pump is inside the tank and electric; on diesels there's an additional high-pressure pump near the engine. Either can fail after long service or from poor-quality fuel. Typical symptoms: difficulty starting (especially when the tank is low), the engine stalling in traffic, lack of power under acceleration and fluctuating fuel consumption. On diesel, poor fuel quality is the most common cause — water or contaminants quickly destroy injectors and high-pressure pumps.
How a fuel pump is replaced
Petrol pump replacement: the rear boot area is cleared and the tank's service hatch is opened. The tank may need to be partially drained. The pump module is lifted out of its mounting flange, wiring and hoses disconnected and a new pump fitted with a fresh O-ring. The system is pressurised and leak-checked. Diesel high-pressure pump replacement: in the engine bay all injector return lines are isolated, the high-pressure pump mounting bolts are undone and the old pump is removed. A new pump is installed per manufacturer procedure, injectors are bled and the system is taken through adaptation via the diagnostic tool.

Why do fuel pumps fail?
A petrol pump often fails from running the tank near empty for long periods — the fuel itself cools and lubricates the pump, and an empty tank causes overheating. Diesel pumps fail from poor fuel quality or an old fuel filter: water and contaminants block the filter and the diesel, which also lubricates the pump, no longer flows correctly. Changing the fuel filter on schedule and keeping the tank above 1/4 prevents premature pump failure.
